Creating a Manager Development Program

Company:   Mid-size company integrating managers from multiple acquired companies

Goals: 

  • Managers who recognize their impact on employee performance and manage for optimal results
  • Managers who proactively and effectively manage the employee’s relationship with the organization

Process:

  • Identify metrics influenced by manager behavior (e.g., goals achieved, staff promotions, staff turnover)
  • Assess the proficiency of people managers at various levels in the organization
  • Develop programs to increase awareness and develop / strengthen people management skills
  • Deliver training programs to managers
  • Create survey and baseline metrics to measure change

Deliverables:

  • Program available in 60 minute modules accessible via webinar or as full day instructor-led classes
  • Self awareness tool for managers to identify their interpersonal style and its affect on their managerial behavior
  • Training modules on managing employee work and performance: e.g., motivation; delegation; expectations; assessing employee skill, willingness, and ability; meaningful feedback; and performance counseling
  • Training modules on managing the employee’s relationship with the organization: e.g., employee’s performance as it affects organization’s goal achievement; collaborative behavior; relationship building, professional development, and career advancement. 
  • Personal Action Contract for managers to identify areas to strengthen in six weeks following training 

Results:

  • Created a standard benchmark for manager performance across organization
  • Minimized disruption to productivity by providing new managers with guidance about expectations
  • Managers accessed training at times convenient to their schedule without interruption to work
  • Company demonstrated commitment to employee development for minimal cost
  • Employees have tangible program to prepare them for movement into upper management
